Rich is a co-founder of the Tahoe Backcountry Alliance (TBA), a grassroots group of Winter Wildlands Alliance working on behalf of the human-powered winter backcountry community in the Lake Tahoe area. As a veteran professional mountain guide working in wild places in Canada, France, Italy, Switzerland, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Alaska, and Antarctica, and in his backyard Sierra Nevada and Mt. Shasta, he takes pride and pleasure in educating aspiring skiers and climbers, passing along skills and respect for the mountains. When Rich isn’t out skiing and guiding snowy peaks, he’s teaching courses in avalanche safety, glacier travel, crevasse rescue, and ski mountaineering. Rich is constantly striving to expand his skills with extensive education from: the AMGA, AIARE, NOLS, WMI, PSIA, and many other organizations. Promoting the human powered outdoor experience is a big part of Rich’s passion and work, both locally and nationally. He feels strongly that protecting our natural environment and educating skiers and climbers about our winter wild places has to be a priority.
