Soñadora Film: Being an Immigrant is Complicated and Beautiful

Soñadora. Visionary. Dreamer. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). These are the definitions the “Soñadora” film crew are grappling with in their upcoming film featuring Vanessa Chavarriaga.

Traditional film formulas will not work to show the duality of the story told in our first grant-funded film project, “Soñadora”.

Funded by our friends at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and provided exclusively for our upcoming Backcountry Film Festival tour, the story of Vanessa’s complex existence in the outdoors is not an overwhelming objective to overcome (like a mountain to climb or a record to break). Rather, the “Soñadora” film crew will use vulnerable storytelling from years of filming and recreating together to rewrite the typical film formula and welcome the outdoor community into Vanessa’s worlds.

The film begins by reading Vanessa’s own words in Spanish (translated here): “I was born in the heart of the world. In a land of abundance and love. There, everything flows. The rivers and the páramos. The laughter of my aunts’ follows me like a drop of rain flowing into the sea.”

Throughout the film, Vanessa’s original writing will guide the audience through the complexities of what it’s like to be stripped from one place to be dropped in another and asked to excel just to be constantly rejected… and that even in the winter, where we look for solace and quiet recreation, sometimes it cannot be found.

Below are gathered journal writings from the Dreamer herself, Vanessa, to give us a look into the inspiration for the film (past and future).

August 14, 2021 (Red Desert, WY)

“I tried to hide the most beautiful parts of me for years. My melanated skin, my father’s accent, my mother’s Colombian cooking. The elite outdoor athlete community was never a safe space for me to celebrate my differences. It wasn’t too long until I started rejecting the norms of the outdoor athlete community, and the hidden parts of my identity began to come out. It was the end of one life, but the hidden part of me knew it was also a beginning.

All of my life, I have known the burden of carrying my family’s pain on my back. I’ve carried years of colonization, forced assimilation, and violence. Today in the desert, I learned that this was only half the story. I also carry my family’s joy, their laughter, and their ability to connect with the land. These gifts come in a different language, one that is difficult to put down on paper but flows freely when I am running. My ancestral joy is well acquainted with rolling hills, red rock, and big blue skies. I am a piece of the Earth and I have never been separate from it.”

September 11, 2021 (Yellowstone, WY)

“Reduced to its simplest form, migration is the basic right to move. Migration is the basic right to movement, to freedom, to safety, and is not that different from the movement we exercise when we run. Moving on a single track trail is not that different from moving across a border.

I grew up undocumented. As a child, I deeply internalized the narrative that I was not allowed to move. I couldn’t visit my grandparents. I began to forget the names of the trees I once knew. This manifested itself in my body in many different ways. I didn’t spend much time outside, and I spent most of my formative years afraid to take up space in any capacity.

When I run, I express the freedom of movement that my ancestors fought for. I feel their strength lift me up on the trail, making my feet light as I dance through tight rocks and corners. I run for those who are punished for exercising their basic rights to movement and safety. I run for the Earth, who suffers and cries at our borders.

I run for my inner child. I remind her that we can move as far and as fast as we can, and no one can take that away from us. I run for those who grow up like me, so that they know another world is possible for us all. I run for our collective healing and liberation.”

October 21, 2022 (Boise, ID)

“We have a unique ability to hold multiple worlds in our arms, wrap our tongues around multiple cultures. I carry the rivers of my childhood in my veins. no place feels more like home than the mattress on my grandmother’s bedroom floor.

because we’re not able to visit home very often, if at all, we’re able to find slices of home wherever we go. my world is bigger because it has to be. I continue to reaffirm what I have always known: another world is possible.

I’ve never met a Colombian immigrant that doesn’t long to be back in Colombia. I really haven’t. Many of us left in search of safety, better opportunities, or better futures for future generations. In my case it was all three. Being an immigrant means grieving something that is not entirely lost. The tradeoff to being home in the Mountain West is that you give up your culture. You almost have to forget it entirely because it’s too painful to remember and carry it with you in these spaces.

While being able to leave is a privilege in and of itself, I think it’s important to point out that one should not have to leave their home in search of basic human rights.”

Immigrants are continually forced to assimilate and outdoor sports are no different. Is another world possible? We will have to watch to find out.

“Soñadora” will premiere at the 18th annual Backcountry Film Festival World Premiere in Boise, ID on Oct 21, 2022. It will then go on tour to all other BCFF screenings across the country throughout the winter.

Backcountry Film Festival Internship Opportunity

We are seeking an intern to join our film festival production crew this season! This is an amazing opportunity to get introduced to the outdoor recreation and film industries and have fun while doing it.

Produced by Winter Wildlands Alliance (WWA), the annual Backcountry Film Festival (BCFF) is a film program that tours nationally to celebrate the connection between humans and wild winters. BCFF premieres every October in WWA’s hometown of Boise, Idaho, and then tours across the country all winter to raise funds and awareness for our local hosts (avy centers, grassroots groups and alliances, educational centers, university clubs, retail shops, etc.). In a typical season, the tour reaches 40,000 attendees across 100 in-person screenings. In the past two years, we have added virtual screenings that have reached over 4,000 households.

Our new intern will get to share their creative skills to better our film program, national tour, and marketing campaigns for this season’s Festival.

THE DETAILS

WWA is the national non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring and empowering people to protect America’s wild snowscapes. BCFF celebrates all that we and our partners do in snowy cinematic form across the snow belt, from high adventure and rad lines to environmental stewardship and inclusion.

We are seeking a person to provide support to our Festival Director, specifically with our annual tour set-up and communications, film submission review process, media and marketing development, some light admin and merchandise fulfillment work, and event logistics for our premiere and other screenings nationwide.

The position is based in Boise, Idaho, and will begin July 18 and end September 16, with the option to extend and attend the 2022-23 season premiere in October. Weekly schedule is flexible based on candidate’s availability and we ask for a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week. We are seeking an in-person intern but remote / hybrid work will be considered.

At the moment, this position is volunteer-based and unpaid but provides the right candidate an opportunity to learn and develop applicable workplace skills, to expand professional knowledge, to help us towards our national mission, and to gain contacts and experience in the outdoor industry and media spheres. However, we recognize unpaid internships are not ideal and are actively working to get this position compensated.

Other benefits include: an outdoor pro account to get discounted gear from our partners and networking opportunities set up by your direct supervisor based on your specific interests in the industry.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND JUSTICE

WWA is dedicated to growing in and listening to on-going DEIJ conversations. Throughout our work, our staff and board navigate how to make wild winters more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and just. We appreciate a candidate who is willing to do the same and views this process as an on-going personal and professional growth opportunity. We are more than happy to provide both structured learning and conversational opportunities for this growth throughout the Internship.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking an in-person candidate but remote work or hybrid will be considered in the right situation. We would love to find a candidate interested and with the availability to stay on through the 2022 Festival premiere at the end of October in Boise, ID.

The ideal intern will be excited about outdoor film and have a general knowledge of the film festival experience and/or events. If you’ve been to a Backcountry Film Festival screening before, even better!

We appreciate a background and/or demonstrable interest in any of the following: filmmaking, outdoor recreation, environmental conservation, event planning, marketing and communications, and storytelling.

The following is a list of skills that we would love to see in applicants but also intend to further develop and strengthen throughout the Internship:

  • Detail-oriented and an effective communicator
  • Ability to adapt in role-related situations in a professional manner

Winter Wildlands Alliance Presents: The 17th Annual Backcountry Film Festival

We believe in the power of humans and their spirit. Our mission is to manifest that power in communities through stories of activists, adventurers, and the outdoors to inspire and activate.

The Backcountry Film Festival is a year-round, community program presented by Winter Wildlands Alliance that brings messages relevant to WWA’s mission and on-going stewardship, policy and advocacy initiatives throughout every season. A collage of human-powered stories and backcountry-inspired experiences, BCFF brings wild conversations and inspires action to communities that celebrate the present while looking towards the future.

The 17th Annual Backcountry Film Festival will be screening documentaries and ski movies about athletic pursuit in the mountains, artistic vision, friendship, and how the snowsports community is adapting to a changing environment.

Film Descriptions

ASCEND:  Reframing Disability in the Outdoors

By Faith E. Briggs and TopTop Studio

Vasu is not seeking to inspire you to feel good. His trauma doesn’t exist solely to benefit the education of others. He is seeking to inspire you to move mountains. To take action. Skiing is the method, but the real mountains are the “isms” that fail to support Disabled communities, communities of color and so many others for whom access has not been a right. Through his personal journey and approaching a new objective, the famed line “The Skillet” on Mt. Moran, and through over 40,000 “dips to Nirvana,” we hear his truth and begin to comprehend what it might look like to be in solidarity.

Finding Gulo: The Movement to Save the Wolverine

By The Wilder Studio & Wild Confluence

“Finding Gulo” follows a backcountry ski guide & field biologist who set out to document an elusive population of wolverines. This short film celebrates the power of citizen science to protect endangered wildlife in the face of climate change.

PERSPECTIVE – Fred Campbell

By Sherpas Cinema

When you’re an athlete, your sport defines you. TNF team athlete Fred Campbell was a football player. He lived and breathed the gridiron grind until a career-ending injury opened a door into the world of climbing.

A Tribute to a Glacier

By Thaïs Despont

A musical immersion in the wonderful landscapes of the Athabasca Glacier in Jasper National Park, seen through an indigenous lens.

Alone Beneath the Northern Lights

By Valentin Boitel-Denyset

A winter beyond the Arctic Circle, I open the door of a wooden hut lost in the heart of the white landscapes, far from any civilization. The northern lights blaze the skies, and the views are incredibly beautiful. I take care to write down my ideas, my sensations, and to record my life as a hermit. This place is propitious to wonder, to poetry, to reason…

Denizens of the Steep

By Orijin Media

As backcountry skiing grows in popularity—and more people are headed into the wilderness than ever before—we must become aware of our environment, understand our impact and take measures to recreate responsibly. Denizens of the Steep explores the impact of backcountry recreation on migratory sheep, with professional ski mountaineer/guide Kim Havell and others discussing the importance of protecting and conserving the wild places in which we roam.

Eastside Story

By Mountain Grown Media

This is the story of two seasoned backcountry skiers, mountain guides Lel Tone and Brennan Lagasse who have traveled the world and experienced some of the harshest and wildest snow-covered places. But here, these two Lake Tahoe-based skiers venture deep into their own backyard—the vast and rugged east side of California’s Sierra Nevada mountains to learn about the land and love the way they live.

Finding Balance

By Santino Martirano

Through life we dabble, we try new things, and we test the waters by sticking a toe in. But, every so often something special happens and we can’t help but to dive deep.

Lot’zza Mia

By Mad Trees

A film on skiing and eating pizza – a lot of pizza, in the lot. Caitlin Mitchell and Griffin Dunne embark on an epic search for cheese when really it’s the journey that matters. L’epica saga di un’odissea della pizza.

REVERIE

By Eclectic Brew Productions

Encaustic artist and outdoor adventurer, Bridgette Meinhold lives among the Wasatch Mountains in Utah. Her paintings reflect the aspen groves and peaks that surround her. On a frigid March morning, just before her birthday, Meinhold turns her muse into her canvas to create a snow labyrinth.

Snow Rangers

By Wool Hat Creative

Snow Rangers is a short film that follows the Colorado Mountain Club’s backcountry program that is helping to manage expanding winter recreation in southwest Colorado.

Off-Piste Opus

By Luke Nelson

A raw edit of the sounds of the backcountry.

The Approach

By Mad Trees

An action-driven ski and snowboard film elevating people of color, women and adaptive athletes.

Wild Ice

By Bear Witness Media

In far northern Minnesota, roughly once every ten years, the early-season ice conditions set up just right for skating. The window to travel the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness via Nordic skates is brief, but these locals took advantage of beautiful weather and headed into the wilderness on perfect ice.

Film Descriptions

Pathfinder: Life Beyond Fear

By Adam Rubin and Dan Lior

Pathfinder is a tale about the human spirit. The film follows six world-class slackliners (Highliners) on a mission deep into the Norwegian mountains to attempt something that’s never been seen before: Walking a thin line, elevated in the vastness between two colossal cliffs, illuminated only by the mystical northern lights. The yearning that drives adventurers and explorers to climb the highest peaks, sail endless oceans, and cross vast deserts in the name of progress, is the same passion that drives these slack-liners to attempt what has still been unclaimed. Through the extreme conditions and endless challenges, we learn about their elemental desire to explore the limits of humankind.

LOST

By Brody Leven

This film shouldn’t exist. These iPhone clips were never supposed to be shown. But when your passion is your job and also your enemy, a tough stint can deconstruct life into consecutive losses. Losses that come in so many forms. The unique ways we cope are part of how we justify our responses. For professional skier Brody Leven, a series of losses ultimately steered him to the highest peak in the Republic of Georgia, where a three-week trip led to a one-hour ski descent and ultimately two years of reckoning with himself. When the loss of a role model, partner, job, and identity collide, weak confidence can suffer. The way loss translates to outdoor challenges is where he finds hope.

Float to Ski

By Allie Rood

This is the story of a bunch of river guides and ski bums who dreamt of floating to ski in the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. This float to ski expedition took six years of daydreaming before the crew realized no time was a good time to embark in what unfolded as a true adventure of a lifetime. The river still remains the only viable (and machine free) way to access the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The Middle Fork flows through the center of this 2.5-million acre wilderness area, which is the largest contiguous federally managed wilderness in the Lower 48. Similar to the Grand Canyon, only a select group of permit drawers, paying clients and river guides get to float the river each season. Unlike the Grand Canyon, the Middle Fork’s elevation starts around 7000 feet and is free flowing, snow and rain fed for 425 miles until the Salmon River joins with the Snake River.

Last Tracks

By Erik Petersen

After shedding a lifetime of belongings, moving to an assisted living facility with his ailing sweetheart, and now coping with losing his mind, former world-class athlete Alan Jackson, 87, embraces his last tracks, and what remains despite the losses.

LATITUDE

By Wesley Walker and Brittney Ziebell

LATITUDE is a poetic short documentary film that follows four daring young women to the 79th parallel, under 700 miles from the North Pole to rediscover themselves amidst Svalbard’s epic arctic ocean sailing, ice mountain climbs, and ski descents. Shelby Dyer, Anna Marno, Brittney Ziebell & Jessica Baker are all former competitive skiers & they revisit what skiing means to them to find a new curiosity and love for a sport they’ve known all their lives.

Resonances

By Florencia Barrabino

This short experimental film is set on “Patagonia Argentina”. It portrays, in a conceptual, non-narrative way, the harsh climate of the glaciers and the stillness that comes with the first snow of the year. And, as everything in nature, then suddenly, it changes. The sun slowly begins to warm things up again. Animals and people awake to another cycle.

Last Call for Moose Mountain

By Joe Fairbanks

In Northern Minnesota, backcountry skiers are fighting to save their most coveted terrain, which is the site of proposed development by a local ski area.

Awaken [Revelstoke Segment]

By SunGod

A Festival cut featuring one segment, this is the story of three groups of winter adventurers, each dedicated to the pursuit of adventure, each loyal to their home playground. Filmed in three iconic winter locations, AWAKEN follows these adventurers as they are faced with the growing impact of climate change, right in their backyard. Contrasting the happiness we draw from the mountains with the harsh reality of an uncertain future, this film reminds us that the environmental message is truly simple; to adventure is to connect with the wild. It is this connection that empowers us to protect these fragile spaces and inspire others to follow.

Wild Space

By Jordan Manley

Rocket Scientist, Space Junk Crusader, backcountry and extra-terrestrial Leave No Trace advocate – Natalie Panek uses her passion for space and genius for aerospace robotics to combat pollution in outer space.

Yellowstone Gateway

By The Conservation Alliance and Uncage the Soul Productions

Three locals from Livingston, Montana, led the effort to permanently protect 30,370 acres at the gateway to Yellowstone National Park from the threat of industrial scale gold mining. Determined to protect the place they love, Conservation Alliance grantee County Environmental Council and more than 400 area businesses came together to form the Yellowstone Gateway Business Coalition in 2015. Four years later, Congress passed the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act. This area can now continue to exist as an important migration corridor for mule deer and elk, as well as an all-season recreation paradise for visitors and locals alike.

Freeride Ski at Home

By Philipp Klein

Just before the current health situation locked us in, the director was about to go Freeriding with his family. It was supposed to be the big adventure of the year, the one he had been eagerly awaiting for a year. Therefore, the lockdown had him thinking about skiing the whole time, so he started to think how he could ski without leaving his living room.

The Classic Route

By Alexis Blaise, Maxime Moulin, Thomas Guerrin, and Hensli Sage

The famous “Vallée Blanche” in Chamonix is an off-piste ski route in the Mont Blanc range. Discover Sam Favret revisiting this classic one with his own style!

Best of Fest: Celebrating 15 Years of Films in One

If you’re like us, you’ve spent the last six months reimagining the world around you.

Reimagining how we do what we do from home – balancing both our work and personal lives from our couches and new at-home offices; how we entertain ourselves as films and TV show productions were put on pause; what we look forward to as trips were cancelled and events effectively postponed until who knows when; what the backcountry will look like each season moving forward with more usage and less opportunity to educate; and how we all do this together, in a world that’s asking more of us in terms of assessing safety and security, emotional intelligence, historical understanding, and requesting skill sets in listening and compassion be at the forefront of all conversations.

At Winter Wildlands Alliance, all we’ve been doing is asking these questions – over and over and in a variety of forms: What will our policy and advocacy efforts look like in a virtual business world and in an outdoor industry where more people are wanting to get outside without much access to education and resources? How do we bring K-12 students outside to learn about snow science, watersheds, and avalanche safety when they aren’t even allowed inside a classroom? How do we provide a film festival experience that still connects our audiences to the backcountry spirit, without risking their safety and health? How do we ultimately provide support for our grassroots groups, backcountry partners, and member community when we’re not sure what tomorrow will look like?

Everyone is reimagining. As we get closer to our favorite season (winter, did we really have to say it?), Backcountry Film Festival has reimagined our emphasis on bringing backcountry communities together to hoot and holler around a screen filled to the brim with human-powered storytelling. Our ask now is that you do so, instead of from the edge of your seat in your local theatre, but rather from the edge of your couch in your living room. Or from the edge of your camper chair in your backyard. Or from the back of your tailgate at a drive-in. The reimagining never ceases of places we can all still come together and celebrate human-powered, winter stories.

One way we’ve reimagined how we come together (virtually and in-person as deemed safe and smart to do so) is to provide more opportunities to celebrate this season. How about we start with a collection some of the best films from the past 15 seasons? While we wish we could engage you all in a binge-watching fest of all seasons past, we figured this would be the next best thing. So here it is: our Best of Fest trailer and film line-up announcement. We hope to see you “here” soon.

*Our Best of Fest will be hosted by local grassroots groups, backcountry retailers, and other community members. Please visit our tour page for more information on local screenings. We highly encourage you to attend your local screening or intentionally choose what screening you purchase tickets for (and if you don’t have one, reach out so we can schedule one for you!). Funds raised go back to your local backcountry community, so it’s vital you “show” up from the comfort of your own home for the host(s)/location(s) that are near and dear to your heart. Some of these screenings will also be “geofenced”, which requires you to be located within the state we designate for a specific screening to be screened in and will be denoted in the event title if it is geofenced.

Coming Soon to a Couch Near You: The 16th Annual Backcountry Film Festival

As we’ve spent our summer watching the world, commuting from our home office to our backyard when the clock strikes 5pm, and entertaining each other during virtual happy hours; we’re preparing for colder backyard commutes and cozier home office sweaters and looking ahead to the 16th annual Backcountry Film Festival like we’ve never seen it.

For 15 winters, the Backcountry Film Festival has brought people indoors to celebrate our favorite adventures in the outdoors. The 2019-20 season featured many a’ cheers over Sierra Nevada brews, a brand new logo, sweet gear giveaways thanks to our awesome sponsors, and a line-up of films from an inspiring crew of storytellers, adventurers, and conversation-starters in the backcountry.

But as we all know, COVID-19 interrupted many things, including the tail end of last season’s film tour. The pandemic has also dramatically changed the landscape of film gatherings as we know and love them. The health, safety, and access of our backcountry communities is at the forefront of our minds. But we like to focus on the positives. The pandemic gave us an opportunity to reimagine the Backcountry Film Festival. The future of our shared vision has been dynamically rearranged and challenged to present more diverse stories in ways we haven’t thought about before.

So, what’s the plan?

We hope to present a unique festival experience that inspires action, engages through knowledge, and brings together a community of backcountry storytellers. In order to better serve our communities, lift up the voices that are typically not heard as loudly as others, and to continue celebrating our backcountry experiences, we’re leaning in deeper to just that: the “Backcountry” in our name. Here’s what we’ve got coming your way:

  • “Best of Fest” – A collection of our favorite films from the past fifteen years of BCFF screenings.
  • Beyond Backcountry – A series of follow-ups with your favorite filmmakers, athletes, and storytellers! Keep your eyes peeled as we release more and more of these throughout the season. Check out our first episode with Caroline Gleich and Rob Lea of 2019’s film, “Climb for Equality,” here.
  • 2020-21 Season – The show must go on! We are planning an entirely virtual film tour this winter with all your favorite local partners, a collection of truly wild stories, and “keep you on the edge of your couch” human-powered stoke.
  • Film Fund – We’re working to provide intentional film funding opportunities for those who share our vision for a diverse and accessible backcountry.
  • Summer 2021 – Shh! This is our biggest project still in the works… but let’s just say, the backcountry fun doesn’t stop once the snow melts.

With all this in mind, we can’t wait to launch into another Festival season with you – set to inspire your backyard human-powered adventures all year long. A collage of human-powered stories and backcountry-inspired experiences, our film collection will continue to bring wild conversations and better inspire action. A mixture of films featuring backyard adventurers, grassroots groups, and more are featured on-screen adjacent to the standard industry, large-sponsor films to relay important messages around policy and advocacy, youth, and backcountry culture across all streams.

We’re grateful to have such a unique community who shows up in full force at every screening; a wide range of films that speak to many experiences in the snowy backcountry season-after-season; to be able to adapt to changes in the forecast; and to continue sharing the backcountry with our fellow human-powered audience. What is adventure without change?
